It is interesting to note that the course was relaid with the fibresand surface in 1989 and the majority of the fastest times were recorded at the course in 1989 / 1990. However, as the Winter All-Weather Season has become more competitive, we have started to see better quality horses being campaigned over the winter, the two fastest 5f times have been recorded in March 2010 and January 2012.

Fibresand Sire Stats

Over the years there has been a definite trend in the breeding of horses who excel on the fibresand of Southwell. In a recent interview Hugh Taylor of AtTheRaces examined the top sires on the fibresand by comparing their offspring’s success on the all-weather to their strike rate on the turf. Hugh’s finding’s were very interesting, although some of the sample sizes were small:
